Presenting the Jon Sigerman 'Hangnail' collection. Jon is known for his fine gem crystals, most notably his Beryl and Mogok Rubies, and his great eye towards quality and color. He assembled this small thumbnail collection and jokingly refered to them as "Hangnails'. Though small, they reflect the same taste and criteria he applys to his regular collection.
R496 - Milarite $ 500 Milarite locality, Rossing Mountains, Erongo Region, Namibia thumbnail - 1 x 0.7 x 0.7 cm
Single well terminated Milarite crystal from Namibia. Milarite is a rare silicate mineral with good crystals found at only a small number of localities worldwide. Well terminated, translucent single crystal with nicely beveled termination edges. Complete and undamaged with some irregular growth on a back prism face. A rare thumbnail. Ex. Jon Sigerman.
R497 - Axinite $ 125 Puiva Mountain, Saranpaul, Berezovo district, Russia thumbnail - 1.7 x 0.8 x 0.2 cm
Razor-sharp, glassy single Axinite crystal from Russia. This locality is well known for producing these fantastic floater crystals. This is a doubly-terminated gem crystal with full transparency. The minor edge chipping is much less noticable in person. Ex. Jon Sigerman.
R498 - Tourmaline (2 crystals) $ 350 Pederniera Mine, Minas Gerais, Brazil thumbnail - 1.8 x 0.5 x 0.5 cm
Two transparent Tourmaline crystals from the Pederniera Mine. The larger crystal is pink with a green termination. The smaller crystal is pink with a bright cranberry red termination. Both a perfect and complete with excellent transparency. Ex. Jon Sigerman obtained from Ian Merkel, a geologist who worked at the Pederniera mine.

Transparent single Peridot crystal from Pakistan. Well terminated and complete. Sharp crystal with good color and transparency with a few included black needle-like crystals of Ludwigite. The glass-like transparency is more evident in hand. Ex. Jon Sigerman.
R501 - Apatite $ 750 SOLD Kunar Prov., Afghanistan thumbnail - 2.2 x 1.7 x 1.5 cm
Well saturated purple Apatite crystals. The main crystal is 1.3cm wide and 8mm thick. Ex. Jon Sigerman acquired from Wayne and Stevia Thompson.
P527 - Stephanite, Polybasite $ 1500 SOLD Husky Mine, Elsa, Yukon, Canada thumbnail - 2.2 x 1.5 x 1.3 cm
Irridescent combination specimen of Polybasite and Stephanite crystals from a one time find in the 1970s. The specimen features platy groups of Polybasite and elongated crystals of Stephanite with a colorful and attractive purple/blue/green iridescence. Both top and bottom sides photographed. Ex. Neil Levett collection.
P103 - Cuprite $ 1500 Red Dome Mine, Mungana, Queensland, Australia thumbnail - 1.9 x 1.5 x 1 cm
Transparent single Cuprite crystal from the famous Red Dome mine, considered by many to have produced the world's best Cuprite specimens. This crystal has complex growth and contacts from other crystals and lights up like a piece of red glass when backlit - it's entirely transparent! Note the dark area at the bottom in the backlit photos is caused by the putty used to hold the crystal in place and is not due to the crystal lacking transparency in this area. Ex. Jon Sigerman.
AU170 - Gold $ 500 SOLD Aouint Ighoumane, Assa-Zag Province, Guelmim-Oued Noun Region, Morocco thumbnail - 1.7 x 1 x 0.5 cm
Bright metallic 1.7cm spinel twinned Gold crystal group from recent finds in Morocco. This is an aesthetic cluster with two main spinel-twin crystals rising up together from a thicker base. Weighs 1.36 grams. Ex. Jon Sigerman.
V120 - Diaspore $ 600 Milas, Mugla Prov., Turkey thumbnail - 1.8 x 1.4 x 0.5 cm
V-twin crystal of color change Diaspore. From new finds in the mountains near Milas, these new Diaspore crystals are spectacular in color and form. Glassy, flat termination faces on both 'arms'. There is a small notch on the left side where another crystal grew, and a very slight edge cleave on the lower left, otherwise complete and undamaged. Gem quality and transparent inside. Medium purple color in natural sunlight. Ex. Jon Sigerman.
M617 - Peridot $ 150 SOLD Pyaung Gaung, Mogok, Myanmar thumbnail - 1.6 x 0.5 x 0.4 cm
Highly gemmy vivid green Peridot crystal. Mogok is known for the world's best Peridot, though they much less common than crystals from Pakistan. They are characterized by great transparency and fine green color, often with surface etching. Larger crystals (such as Bill Larson's that has been the back cover of Mineralogical Record many times), even only 4-5cm, can cost in the many tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars, they are just that rare and desirable. Though small, this crystal is gem quality internally and has high surface luster on the narrow prism faces and frosted luster on the wider prism faces. Ex. Jon Sigerman.
AU707 - Topaz $ 900 Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais, Brazil thumbnail - 2 x 0.8 x 0.6 cm
Single purple Topaz crystal from Ouro Preto. Complete all around and undamaged with glossy luster. Uncommon color! Ex. Jon Sigerman.
P337 - Merelaniite in Tanzanite $ 350 Merelani Hills, Arusha, Tanzania thumbnail - 0.8 x 0.5 x 0.4 cm
Single blue Tanzanite crystal with micro hair-like inclusions of Merelaniite. The Tanzanite is complete all around, glassy, and transparent. Merelaniite is a recently discovered rare mineral in the Cylindrite group of minerals. These are rare enough just attached to other minerals, but even more so when included within a complete Tanzanite crystal! Ex. Jon Sigerman.
FM106 - Tanzanite $ 250 SOLD Merelani Hills, Arusha, Tanzania thumbnail - 0.8 x 0.8 x 0.3 cm
Small single pink Tanzanite crystal. Glassy and transparent, it's pink in both directions. The wider face is a lighter pink but the side face pops with incredible color, especially for a small crystal. Ex. Jon Sigerman.
K771 - Diopside $ 180 Merelani Hills, Arusha, Tanzania thumbnail - 1.4 x 0.7 x 0.4 cm
Sharp single Diopside crystal with excellent luster, transparency. Better than average color for such a transparent crystal, and undamaged, complete all around. Ex. Jon Sigerman.
LP230 - Villiaumite $ 750 Aris Quarries, Windhoek, Khomas Region, Namibia thumbnail - 1 x 1 x 0.9 cm
Transparent orange Villiaumite from the open pit phonolite quarries in Aris, Namibia. While you can get larger, dark red, translucent cleavages from the Kola peninsula in Russia, I think these gem orange crystals from Aris are the world's best Villiaumite, and this is a good one. This is an exquisite thumbnail-sized Villiaumite with total transparency and a uniform orange color. Complete all around and undamaged. Ex. Jon Sigerman. ©2010-2018 Marin Mineral |
