New Veszelyite from the Congo

Twenty one new specimens of Veszelyite recently mined in the Palabanda Quarry in the Republic of the Congo.  The Palabanda quarry is an old Copper prospect that was later converted to a limestone quarry that closed in 2018. Subsequent prospecting and mining headed by Tomek Praszkier lead to the discovery of these superb Veszelyites.  The initial find was made in 2021 and the below specimens are from mining efforts in 2022. The Veszelyite occur on either bright blue Hemimorphite or deep green Zincolibethenite.  Some also have micro crystals of Kipushite.  The specimens were collected on one wall of the quarry and, according to Tomek, the wall collapsed during the past winter season and prospects for future Veszelyite finds are low (but will be attempted!).  While the old classic Veszelyites from the Black Pine Mine in Montana remain my favorite, these new Veszelyites have a lot to offer and are superior in some respects, including:

* Color! The color contrast of the dark blue Veszelyite against either the lighter blue Hemimorphite or green Zincolibethenite is fantastic

* Specimen size - Most of the Black Pine Mine specimens are thumbnails. With this find you can have displayable cabinet sized Vezelyite specimens.

* Crystal size/mass - While the Black Pine Mine specimens have larger individual crystals, the crystal aggregates on these specimens are larger, at least in mass.  Hemispherical crystal groups on these specimen range in size up to 2 x 2 cm! 

* Cost - When you can find them, good Black Pine Mine specimens will cost you around $5,000-$15,000, for a thumbnail! These new specimens are a good value relatively.

* Availability - Unlike Black Pine specimens which are usually only obtainable when old collections are recycled, there are currently limited numbers of available Palabanda specimens to choose from.

Sparkling deep blue crystal groups of Veszelyite to 1cm on a matrix covered by Zincolibethenite. The larger crystals are located near the top of the specimen, with smaller individual crystals with slightly lighter blue color to the lower left of the larger crystals. The Zincolibethenite ranges in color from dark green to blue/green. Mined in 2022. The locality is a former Limestone quarry with Lead, Zinc, and Copper mineralization that closed in 2018.

Vivid bright blue crystals of Veszelyite on sky blue Hemimorphite. The Veszelyite crystals reach 5mm in size and are well separated. The Hemimorphite forms a botryoidal surface with a beautiful color contrast to the Veszelyite. Micro greenish/blue crystals of Kipushite, a rare copper and zinc phosphate species, are present on the Hemimorphite. Mined in 2022. The locality is a former Limestone quarry with Lead, Zinc, and Copper mineralization that closed in 2018.

Deep blue crystals of Veszelyite on sky blue Hemimorphite. The Veszelyite crystals reach 7mm in size and are well separated. The transpucency and color of the Hemimorphite is just incredibly good on this specimen. Mined in 2022. Large specimen of deep blue crystals of Veszelyite on sky blue Hemimorphite. An amazing cabinet sized, well proportioned matrix Veszelyite specimen, unheard of prior to this find. The Veszelyite crystal groups reach 1cm in size and are well separated, with interconnected clusters to 2.5cm wide. The Hemimorphite forms a botryoidal surface with a beautiful color contrast to the Veszelyite. Mined in 2022. The locality is a former Limestone quarry with Lead, Zinc, and Copper mineralization that closed in 2018.

Large (!) deep blue crystal groups of Veszelyite to 2.2cm on a vuggy matrix covered by Zincolibethenite. The Veszelyite crystal groups are just amazing on this one - large hemispherical groups of outstanding size. Much of the Veszelite is sprinkled with micro crystals ob blue/green Kipushite.
