Cluster of thick rhombs of red Rhodochrosite. This is from a recent find and we are more accustomed to seeing small wafer-like, twin Rhodo crystals from here, rather than these large, thick crystals. Crystals reach 2.5cm wide. Undamaged with some etched areas, mostly on the backside.

Twinned Rhodochrosite crystal, a floater with no points of attachment. The color is just outstanding. This was recently released from the Charlie Key collection and it is clear he saved some good ones. Previous twinned Mont St. Hilaire Rhodos I've seen have all been a darker brick red color and opaque. This one is bright red and translucent through most of the specimen. Undamaged. A small amount of minerals attached to one edge.

A gemmy 'ball' of small Rhodochrosite crystals rests in the center of dark gray matrix. Two other areas also show Rhodochrosite crystals, but the center group is the main point of attraction. When seen with the aid of magnification, you will find dozens of millimeter size clear cubic Fluorite crystals in the matrix areas that host the Rhodochrosite.

Rhodochrosite on matrix from a classic old German locality. The Rhodochrosite occurs as both botryoidal groups and individual scalenohedral crystals. The Rhodochrosite is deep red with a more brown (iron rich?) layer on the surface. The locality is an ancient iron mine, abandoned in 1928, working iron and manganese mineralisations hosted by Devonian schists [MINDAT]. Ex. Bob Byers collection acquired from Wendel Minerals (comes with a Wendel label showing a price of $480).
